Radiation safety has long relied on wearable lead aprons and accessories to protect healthcare personnel during patient procedures. However, these can be uncomfortable, pose infection risks, and may not provide sufficient protection. Specialty-specific radiation barriers exist in the cath lab or hybrid rooms but often only cater to select practitioners: the procedural or interventional physician.
Newer barriers are improving the protection for cath lab nurses and techs, but none has been designed to protect the other essential team members performing these hybrid procedures needing radiation and ultrasound technology.
Comparative higher radiation doses indicate a previously underappreciated occupational risk faced by interventional sonographers and anesthesiologists, which has implications for the rapidly expanding structural heart team such as Mitral Valve Clip placement.
Beyond this room, the GladiatorShield has applications for all other rooms where fluoroscopy is use, such as orthopedics, neuro, or general cases as port placement and cholangiography procedures.
Introducing
The GladiatorShield:
A full-body, non-wearable radiation barrier designed for optimal user ergonomics and enhanced protection.
It is pliable, allowing physicians to interact with patients while reducing radiation exposure to sensitive areas such as the head and neck. This innovative solution offers superior protection for a wide range of healthcare professionals during hybrid procedures involving radiation and ultrasound technology.
How it works
Optimal visualization
A semicircular 180-degree transparent acrylic to fully protect the head and neck independent of the user’s position. A hinge to pivot forward adjusts the ergonomics for the optimal visualization of the operative site.
Easy to move to any position
The specially designed base allows for swiftly displacing the shield to any position, including difficult and close quarters. The front flat tongue provides stability and prevents cable entanglements.
Personalized Height
Through a unique design mechanism, the user can change the height of the middle and top sections for comfort and total protection with a minimal one-handed effort.
Fenestrated middle section
Provides access to the patient while being protected.
Front hooks
Offers a useful setup to rest and hang a TEE probe.
Sterile transparent drape
A front cover with two limbs enables the practitioner to perform sterile procedures using sterile gloves over the limb terminations.
One reason only: complete effective protection.
Current studies have demonstrated the available barriers on the market and standard setup for structural heart procedures do not protect all the essential team members, specifically the cardiac anesthesiologist and the sonographer. There are no shields available in the market that offers full body protection, including head and neck. There are no shields available in the market that allows to work through the barrier while being protected.
