Radiation safety has long relied on wearable lead aprons and accessories to protect healthcare personnel during patient procedures. However, these can be uncomfortable, pose infection risks, and may not provide sufficient protection. Specialty-specific radiation barriers exist in the cath lab or hybrid rooms but often only cater to select practitioners: the procedural or interventional physician.

Newer barriers are improving the protection for cath lab nurses and techs, but none has been designed to protect the other essential team members performing these hybrid procedures needing radiation and ultrasound technology.

Comparative higher radiation doses indicate a previously underappreciated occupational risk faced by interventional sonographers and anesthesiologists, which has implications for the rapidly expanding structural heart team such as Mitral Valve Clip placement.
